What Does a Crossover Do?
A crossover is a type of drill bit that is used to connect two pieces of pipe together. It is also used to connect two different types of pipe together, such as when you need to connect a water line to a sewer line. Crossovers come in all sorts of sizes and can be customized to your specific needs.
Usually, crossover subs exist to provide for the connection between collars and drill pipes, and they are designed with a box and threads. When these two threaded components are joined together, one of the ends of the crossover sub is matched to the thread pattern of the component to which it is being joined, and the opposite end is matched to the thread of the second component. Most drill rigs have a wide variety of crossovers subs and drill operators will make use of them as needed to join different components together.
The threaded connections of subs are protected by a phosphate-coated material layer to prevent galling during their initial make-up.
Why Are Crossover Subs Important?
In any drilling operation, crossover subs are essential, as they provide the needed flexibility to adapt drill strings to the unique requirements of the well that is being drilled. These crossover subs are also used to repair any damaged sections of the drill string and connect any dissimilar sections of the drill string. The safe, successful completion of drilling operations depends largely on crossover subs.
The Importance of Crossover Subs in Oil Rig Drill Strings
Depending on the requirements of a client or a specific drilling job, there are different crossover subs to make use of. These subs come equipped with a side or inline port that helps in the circulation of fluids, and the majority of the connections are cut to the requisite ground and safety standards. These subs are also typically manufactured from heat-treated steel for enhanced durability and longevity.
Get Bit Subs & Floats To Match Your Crossover
In addition to crossovers, we also carry a wide variety of bit subs and floats. Bit subs are used to connect your drill bit to the drill pipe, and they come in all sorts of sizes to match the crossovers. Floats are used to keep the drill bit from going too deep into the ground and they come in a variety of sizes and weights.
How Do Float Subs Work?
When you’re drilling a hole, you need to be able to control the depth of the drill bit. If the bit goes too deep, it can damage the pipe. Floats are used to keep the drill bit from running too deep into the ground. They come in a variety of sizes and weights, and they can be customized to your specific needs. Float subs are also utilized to stop any backflow from the drill formation up your drill string and out onto the floor of your rig. Float subs are constructed very similarly to crossover subs, but can also have the same type of connections on either end. Float subs are bored onto the box end in order to allow for a float valve that can be positioned in the diameter of the sub.
